Central to Cherry Pickles’ work is self-portraiture. These paintings often involve role play and so call to attention such popular perceptions as the heroic stature of the male artist (self-portraits as Dylan Thomas and William S Boroughs).
Pickles often works from the car, exploring the way mirrors and windscreens enliven what we see, whether landscapes through smeared windscreens, self-portraits through rear-view mirrors or seated passengers.
