Talk by Simon Moffett
Thirty years ago, West Wales became the focus of world attention when the tanker Sea Empress struck rocks at the entrance to Milford Haven. More than 72,000 tonnes of crude oil were spilled into the sea, creating one of the worst environmental disasters in British history. As severe weather hampered efforts to save the vessel, an enormous clean-up operation was launched to protect Pembrokeshire’s coastline and wildlife.
This illustrated talk tells the story of how the accident happened, the response to the disaster, and the remarkable efforts made to clean and restore Pembrokeshire’s beaches. Presented by Simon Moffett, a former Texaco manager who witnessed events first-hand and brings a unique collection of photographs from the time.
